Target: Dr. Lynn Moody, Rowan-Salisbury School System Superintendent
Goal: Cease relaxing district weapons policies to allow students to taser transgender classmates.
Students could be allowed to carry defensive weapons in school to “defend” themselves against transgender classmates they may encounter in restrooms, as one school board member insinuated, as the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education in North Carolina is in the process of relaxing their policies on defensive weapons on their campuses. This review of defensive weapon policy comes at a time when the state of North Carolina is on the receiving end of a federal lawsuit regarding the state’s “bathroom bill,” which forces transgender men and women to use restrooms according to the sex they were assigned at birth, barring them from using facilities based on their gender identity.
Board member Chuck Hughes said pepper spray and other chemical irritants should be allowed in student possession, especially if North Carolina’s “bathroom bill” is rendered void. He made clear his view that “depending on how the courts rule on the bathroom issues, it may be a pretty valuable tool to have on the female students if they go to the bathroom, not knowing who may come in.”
The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education is effectively endorsing violent confrontation between cisgender and transgender students if the “bathroom bill” is dismantled by the federal government. Schools are supposed to be institutions where students can learn, grow, and feel safe. Relaxing defensive weapons policies, especially as a product of bigoted viewpoints toward a group of people regularly subject to bullying and violence, is a disgusting and disturbing endorsement of “open season” on transgender students should the “bathroom bill” be undone. Sign the petition to voice your opposition to these bigoted and potentially dangerous policy changes.
Dear Dr. Moody,
Weapons provisions exist to keep students safe, so relaxing them is always a risky endeavor. With that being said, relaxing weapons provisions to fall in line with the bigoted, empirically false statements of members of the Rowan-Salisbury school board is not only risky, but flagrantly irresponsible, unethical, and in clear violation of the job of the school board to maintain student safety.
It is with this in mind that we urge you to abstain from further loosening weapons provisions in the Rowan-Salisbury School System and reinstate the provisions as they were prior to relaxation. While members of the school board may believe there will be safety concerns facing cisgender students if transgender students are allowed to use restrooms reflective of their gender identity, there is zero evidence to support those concerns.
What the loosening of these weapons provisions are accomplishing is putting the safety of transgender students in jeopardy based on a viewpoint that has no empirical backbone whatsoever. It is your responsibility as superintendent to protect Rowan-Salisbury students, not further victimize them.
