Target: Dr. Kent Scribner, superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District
Goal: Commend school district for protecting transgender students in public restrooms.
The Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) instituted a policy that allows transgender male and female students use bathrooms that correspond to their gender identity. The policy has drawn ire from many, including Republican Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who has called for the resignation of FWISD Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner, and embattled Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton, who wrote a letter to FWISD Board President Jacinto Ramos about “legal concerns” that the attorney general believes could stem from the district’s policy.
Lieutenant Governor Patrick has been accused of expressing “fake outrage” over the district’s policy and engaging in political grandstanding. He’s being called a “shameless bully.” Steve Rudner, the chairman of Equality Texas, spoke candidly about the lieutenant governor, saying “there is no news here” other than “that the lieutenant governor has decided to pick on an already bullied group of kids.” Rudner finished by calling Patrick’s actions “shameful” and “despicable.”
FWISD Superintendent Dr. Kent Scribner has rebuffed Lt. Gov. Patrick’s call for resignation, saying he is “proud of these guidelines” and that he thinks “they will provide educators with the ability to make all students more comfortable and confident in a learning environment.” FWISD’s policy expressly states that all FWISD schools must make sure students feel safe in school restrooms. If a student is uncomfortable using a restroom with a transgender student, that student can use a single-stall restroom, a gender-neutral restroom, or an empty restroom.
Transgender students should have the right to use the restroom that corresponds to their gender identity and not be segregated to only using the restroom corresponding to their biological sex. Sign the petition and stand with the Fort Worth Independent School District, ensuring that transgender students are permitted to use the restroom they identify with based on gender identity and are not forced to use restrooms based upon ignorance and unfounded fear.
Dear Dr. Scribner,
Fort Worth Independent School District’s gender equality stance on restrooms is a noble one. Transgender students, both male and female, should be allowed access to facilities that correspond with their gender identity and should not be forced to use facilities for a sex with which they do not identify, especially taking into consideration the unfounded nature of the objections of officials like Lt. Gov. Patrick and A.G. Paxton.
The fight over “bathroom bills” has been a tiring one and it’s refreshing to see a respected official in education take a stand for equality and against bigoted agendas. It is with this in mind that we wish to thank you for what you’re doing and let you know we stand with you.
