Demand Harsher Punishment for Owners Who Leave Pets in Hot Cars

Target: Michael Gove, Minister of Justice of the United Kingdom

Goal: Urgently introduce tougher sentences for people who leave pets to die in hot cars.

Countless dogs die each year after being left in hot cars by careless owners. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rescued six dogs that had been left in parked cars in the heat at one event. Each year, as summer approaches and temperatures increase, there are more and more cases of dogs being endangered or killed after being carelessly left in cars.

Michigan will soon become the 17th American state to strengthen laws punishing owners who leave animals in sweltering or freezing vehicles. The aim is to protect countless pets from suffering and death as well as raising awareness that leaving dogs alone in cars can severely endanger them. Currently, an owner whose pet dies as a result of being left in an unattended vehicle only faces a maximum of 26 weeks imprisonment in the United Kingdom, while the new law in Michigan would charge perpetrators with a maximum of five years in jail and a 5,000 dollar fine.

With summer fast approaching, the United Kingdom urgently needs to pass harsher laws to protect pets. Sign this petition urging authorities to introduce tougher sentences to discourage people from leaving dogs in parked cars.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Gove,

Countless dogs die each year from being left unattended in hot vehicles. While Michigan will soon become the latest in a number of American states to pass tougher laws to protect pets from suffering in hot or freezing cars, the United Kingdom’s animal cruelty legislation continues to lag behind.

Please introduce tougher sentences for owners who leave their pets to suffer and die in cars in order to prevent more animals from meeting this fate.

Sincerely,

  1. Any type of cruelty and suffering to ANY BEING, need to be punished. I have never understood why this isn’t just common sense…who would say no to something like this?? I sure wouldn’t want to be in their circle. This isn’t about the people who say no to a more harsh sentence, it’s about the ONES WHO SUFFER♡ Please do the right thing and create a would with less suffering and more held accountable for their actions, please!

Everybody should know by now the consequences of leaving dogs in cars, even on shady days. If I saw an animal suffering I would break the window to get at the animal, no question. I would deal with the consequences later. But by God I would let every media outlet know what the person had done as well. It’s about time people actually became actively involved in protecting animals.
