Target: Costco CEO Jim Sinegal
Goal: Remove herbicide Roundup from store shelves after its main ingredient was found to likely cause cancer.
Costco still sells Roundup after numerous studies of the harmful effects of its main ingredient on the environment and human health. Most recently, a department of the World Health Organization found that this ingredient, glyphosate, “probably” causes cancer in humans. Despite this, it’s so commonly used that it was found in 70 percent of rainfall samples collected in the U.S.
Other countries like Mexico, the Netherlands, and Sri Lanka have begun restricting or outlawing Roundup while the U.S. government does nothing. However, companies do not have to wait for official restrictions to do the right thing. Costco has a history of being environmentally conscious. Recently, the company committed to selling only cage-free eggs after animal rights activists exposed the horrific conditions that caged chickens endure.
If companies refuse to sell Roundup due to its damaging ingredients, people will have to buy safer products and Monsanto will be force to either change the herbicide’s ingredients or lose a lot of money. Costco could be another leader in the pattern of retail companies switching to environmentally friendly products to please their customers. Sign our petition to urge the CEO of Costco to dump Roundup.
Dear Mr. Sinegal,
A recent report from a department of the World Health Organization found that the main ingredient in Roundup, a product your company carries, is likely cancerous to humans. This is especially concerning due to the fact that the use of Roundup is so prevalent–it’s sprayed on most of the products we cultivate and can be found in 70 percent of rain water samples found in the country.
Costco has a history of doing the right thing for both people and the environment we live in. You recently decided to only sell eggs from cage-free chicken farms after finding out how badly caged chickens are treated. You can once again be a leader in corporate morality by banning Roundup and any other products containing glyphosate from your stores.
Anything so likely to cause cancer should be restricted or banned by the federal government, but many U.S. politicians are deep in Monsanto’s pockets. It’s therefore up to the citizens to take our own health and the health of the environment into our hands. Please protect the health of all Americans by removing Roundup from your shelves.
