Target: San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee
Goal: Fire allegedly racist police chief after increase in the killing of people of color by cops following his appointment.
Five people of color have gone on a hunger strike to protest the alleged racism of their city’s Chief of Police. Since the appointment of Chief Greg Suhr to the city of San Francisco five years ago, 21 people in this city alone have been killed by cops. In the past year, three Latino people have been shot down. This is a significant contribution to the national problem of police killing citizens for just one city.
Not only this, but recent texts were discovered in the police department coming from the chain of command included racist and homophobic sentiments. It’s clear that this department has a problem with prejudice to the point that five individuals are putting their lives on the line to petition San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee to fire Greg Suhr before more people die.
Maria Cristina Gutierrez, Ilyich (Equipto) Sato, Edwin Lindo, Ike Pinkston, and Sellassie Blackwell, known as the “#Frisco5,” deserve our support. They’re an inspiration to every community in the U.S. facing the constant threat of racial profiling and police brutality that disproportionately targets people of color. Sign our petition to join them in demanding that Mayor Ed Lee fire Chief Greg Suhr and replace him with someone who can end the prejudice in the San Francisco police department.
Dear Mayor Lee,
Five individuals are currently on a hunger strike that has already gone on for weeks in protest of the San Francisco Chief of Police Greg Surh. Since he’s been in charge, 21 people have been killed by cops including three Latino persons in the past year. It was also discovered that racist and homophobic texts have been going around among the police chain of command.
This is unacceptable behavior for individuals charged with protecting all citizens regardless of race or sexual orientation. It’s also shameful that your city has contributed so many deaths to the national epidemic of deadly police brutality that disproportionately affects people of color. Clearly, Greg Suhr is not fit to be Chief of Police if this is the state of the SFPD.
Maria Cristina Gutierrez, Ilyich (Equipto) Sato, Edwin Lindo, Ike Pinkston, and Sellassie Blackwell are so concerned about the state of your city’s police department that they’re risking their lives by starving themselves. Don’t be responsible for any more deaths. Answer the call of your citizens by firing Greg Suhr and appointing someone who will address the prejudice in the police department.
