Target: Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya
Goal: Forbid forced anal examinations of men suspected of homosexual activities.
A Kenyan court is deliberating the cessation of the outdated, embarrassing, and degrading practice of investigating the anuses of suspected homosexual men. These investigations are a longstanding issue in Kenya, continuing to exist despite their humiliating nature and widely discredited effectiveness, and banning them would be an extremely encouraging step toward equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
Dating back to the 19th century, forced anal examinations focus more on the humiliation of the subject than actual investigation of homosexual activity. Kenyan authorities claim they are attempting to determine if a man accused of homosexuality has engaged in anal sex, but this abhorrent practice has been repeatedly disavowed by major medical organizations across the globe.
These investigations are more of a rape than a medical procedure, with the United Nations claiming that the practice “amount[s] to torture.” The ongoing court case is encouraging, but the government must do more. Sign the petition below and demand an end to these degrading and ineffective “examinations.”
Dear Mr. Kenyatta,
I am writing to insist that your government put an end to forced anal investigations of suspected homosexual men. This practice is outdated and ineffective, having been discredited by major medical associations around the world, with the United Nations claiming that it is tantamount to torture.
Under the guise of attempting to determine if a suspect has engaged in homosexual activity, law enforcement officials in Kenya use these “investigations” as a means to torture and humiliate suspects. It is more rape than it is a medical examination, and I urge you to intervene and put a stop to these degrading and ineffective examinations.
