Stop Using Live Donkey in Art Installation

Target: Maurizio Cattelan

Goal: Stop exhibiting a live donkey as artwork at a busy art fair where he is exposed to bright lights, loud noises and crowds.

A live donkey is being exhibited at an art fair in New York. Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan has decided to use a donkey as “artwork” at the Frieze Projects art fair as though this animal was a mere object. The donkey is kept in a small pen inside a tent, exposed to bright lights, noise and crowds just so that fairgoers can gawk at him. Animals are sentient individuals and are not ours to use for entertainment.

Despite protests by activists, the exhibit continues to display the donkey. One protester, Donny Moss of Their Turn, rightly states that “animals are not art exhibits,” and “the art world should reject animal exploitation.” Aside from the distress and discomfort to this individual donkey, displaying him as an artwork sends the harmful message that animals are ours to exploit as we please.

Sign this petition urging the artist and fair organizers to recognize that animals are sentient beings in their own right and stop displaying them as art.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Cattelan,

I am urging you to stop displaying a live donkey as a piece of artwork. Animals are sentient beings and do not exist merely to entertain us. Aside from the discomfort suffered by this individual donkey, exhibiting him as an object for fairgoers to gawk at spreads the detrimental message that animals are mere objects. You are no doubt aware that this is not the case.

Please display compassion and genuine artistry and stop using sentient beings as art exhibits.

Sincerely,

Why not have the idiot who thinks a live donkey or any live animal is art become a piece of art. Maybe we could display them as an art object. They to are an ass so tit for tat.

  2. Really??? Animals are not models, why expose them to crowds of people, excessive noise and a heightened sense of fear.
