Success: Concealed Handguns Remain Illegal on Georgia’s College Campuses

Target: Georgia Governor Nathan Deal

Goal: Applaud veto of bill that would have allowed concealed handguns to be carried on college campuses in Georgia.

College students in Georgia will not be allowed to carry concealed handguns on campuses, ensuring the safety of students and professors across the state. This is thanks to Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, who vetoed the dangerous bill to allow anyone age 21 and over to carry a concealed handgun on the campuses of Georgia’s public colleges and universities.

From its inception, the bill had faced stiff opposition. In addition to this petition of ForceChange, protests came from the powerful University System of Georgia, which made its dissatisfaction with the bill clear. Additionally, each of the 29 public university and college presidents, along with their respective police chiefs, voiced their disapproval of the bill.

Such a bill was needless and presented an unnecessary safety risk; regardless of permits, students should not be carrying deadly weapons while taking a test or listening to a lecture. Sign the petition below to thank the governor for protecting the residents of his state.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Deal,

I am writing to applaud your recent veto of the so-called “campus-carry” bill, which would have allowed for the carrying of concealed firearms on the campuses of Georgia’s public colleges and universities. From the beginning, the bill faced stiff opposition, and your rejection demonstrates an admirable concern for the safety of your state’s students and professors.

Such a bill was needless and presented an unnecessary safety risk. Even if students have the correct permits, they should not be carrying deadly weapons while taking a test or listening to a lecture. Thank you for identifying and eliminating this clear security risk.

Sincerely,
