Stop Barring Nonprofits From Talking About Abortion

Target: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi

Goal: End gag order preventing AmeriCorps from giving pregnant people information on abortion.

The civil service program AmeriCorps is banned from even talking about abortion with those who come to them in need of information and help. There’s currently a law in place that prohibits this and similar programs from giving pregnant people any information that might help them seek an abortion. Recently, AmeriCorps came under fire for daring to help some women by helping them to become aware of their options in terms of their legal right to choose to end a pregnancy.

The law forbidding AmeriCorps from giving people in need information and support that could help them is another destructive anti-choice attempt to circumvent the constitutional right to abortion as outlined by Roe v. Wade. Its only purpose is to keep pregnant people ignorant of their options in the hope that they might not be able to get an abortion in time and end up having an unwanted child.

This gag order should be considered something that makes it unreasonably difficult to obtain an abortion–something that is forbidden under abortion rights law. Either way, it’s a harmful law that only keeps people who need help from getting it. Sign our petition to demand that congress act to get this gag order repealed.

Dear Minority Leader Pelosi,

There’s currently a law on the books preventing civil service groups like AmeriCorps from giving the people who come to them for help any information or support when it comes to the subject of abortion. If a pregnant person approaches them hoping for help with an unwanted pregnancy, the organization has to sit on its hands rather than providing the help needed.

This is unacceptable. Access to abortion means access the information necessary to obtain an abortion. This gag order is just an anti-choice trick to make it so people can’t access their constitutional right to make the choice they want about their bodies. Additionally, it puts people in danger of hurting themselves in their ignorance of what they need and ends up producing a lot more unwanted children who are likely to grow up neglected, abused, or in poverty.

This gag order law cannot be allowed to continue. Groups like AmeriCorps are supposed to help all people in need, not just the people who aren’t pregnant, and ignorance of one’s choices help no one. I urge you to fight for people’s right to choose by making every effort to get this law repealed before more people get hurt.
