Target: Le Luong Minh, Secretary General of ASEAN
Goal: Ban inhumane and dangerous elephant rides that have caused several human and animal deaths.
In the latest heartbreaking incident involving elephant rides, an elderly elephant has died after carrying tourists around in the heat. The senior female named Sambo, believed to be between 40 and 45 years old, collapsed and died while being ridden around a tourist site. The animal had been forced to carry two travelers on her back in 140 degree Fahrenheit heat and consequently suffered stress, shock, high blood pressure and a heart attack, according to veterinarians who autopsied her.
This is not the first incident of its kind. In fact, elephant rides have resulted in several fatal incidents, many of them involving human deaths. A tourist was recently trampled and killed by a frustrated animal, while another elephant killed his handler and ran off with three tourists on his back. Clearly, forcing elephants to carry tourists around is not only inhumane and archaic, it is also incredibly unsafe for both the animals and humans involved.
Sign this petition demanding that elephant rides are banned so that no more elephants suffer this ordeal and no further handlers or tourists are harmed.
Dear Secretary General Minh,
In the latest fatality caused by elephant rides, an elderly female elephant named Sambo collapsed and died while carrying two tourists around in the heat in Cambodia. Forcing elephants to give rides to tourists is not only incredibly cruel, it is also unsafe for the humans involved.
Two separate incidents in Thailand saw a handler killed by his frustrated elephant and a tourist fatally gored by another. Clearly, elephant rides are extremely dangerous for animals and humans.
Please safeguard tourists and elephants by ensuring that all ASEAN countries ban elephant rides.
