Target: James Landon, Section Chief of the NOAA General Council
Goal: Punish the man who allegedly attacked a pregnant endangered seal on camera.
A video shows a man allegedly repeatedly hitting a seal. The pregnant monk seal was agitated but, luckily, not injured. Demand justice for this endangered seal.
The alleged attack took place at Salt Pond Beach on the island of Kauai, the home of this rare species. RK-30, as the scientific community knows her, reportedly waved her fins in agitation as the man repeatedly hit her. She escaped into the water but the man reportedly continued his attacks until she was out of reach. The 17-year-old seal weighs over 600 pounds and is currently pregnant.
The suspect has been identified and is in custody. If convicted, he faces up to $50,000 in fines and five years in prison. Sign below and demand the harshest punishment for this unsettling attack.
Dear Chief Landon,
A man allegedly attacked a pregnant monk seal and the video footage has gone viral. The attacker allegedly repeatedly hit the seal and chased her into the water. We demand the harshest penalty for this troubling assault.
Monk seals are endangered and highly valued in Kauai. This seal in particular is a survivor. She has faced off with boats and has scars on her neck from a shark attack. Now, pregnant and vulnerable, she needs our protection.
Federal and state laws protect monk seals, due to their endangered status. The man, if convicted, faces up to $50,000 in fines and five years behind bars. We demand that you seek the harshest penalty for this disturbing and clearly deliberate crime.
