Urge City to Reach No-Kill Animal Shelter Status Before End of Year

Target: L.A. Animal Services general manager Brenda Barnette

Goal: Ensure that Los Angeles reaches its no-kill goal for animal shelters before the end of the year.

Five years ago, Los Angeles set a goal of ending euthanization in animal shelters throughout the city by next year and is on its way to that goal. However, it would be far more impressive and save more lives to reach that goal before the end of this year.

When the initiative to become a no-kill city first began five years ago, the city had a 57.8 percent overall live save rate. At this point in the year, Los Angeles animal shelters have reported an 84.3 percent overall live save rate, a massive improvement from the beginning of the campaign.

Despite this, that’s still 15.7 percent of shelter animals who are losing their lives. A 90 percent save rate is the goal because a small percentage of animals are sick or injured, ruling them beyond saving. The 90 percent save rate reflects that no animals are being unjustifiably murdered as a means of population control.

Los Angeles can step up to achieve its goal before the originally planned time. Urge them to take the necessary actions to save all animals lives and become a no-kill city before the end of the year.

Dear Mrs. Barnette,

You’ve done a great job in reducing the number of innocent animal lives that have been lost due to euthanization for population control in shelters. Your goal is to become a no-kill city by the beginning of next year. However, there are steps that can be taken to ensure that goal is met even faster and more animals are saved from unjustified deaths.

I urge you to take action to reach your goal as soon as possible this year and to save these animals.

There is no way Los Angeles can be no kill. What they will become is limited admission, meaning more animals deaths somewhere else and in worse ways.
