Denounce Politician’s Homophobic Comments

Target: North Carolina State Senator Buck Newton

Goal: Apologize for homophobic and transphobic comments about transgender people.

A Republican state senator is under fire after making homophobic and transphobic comments insisting that North Carolinians must “fight to keep [their] state straight” while discussing the controversial “bathroom bill,” a new law that restricts transgender bathroom access and gay rights. State Senator Buck Newton made the comments in a speech supporting the bill, known as HB 2, which forces transgender people to use public restrooms that correspond to the sex on their birth certificate rather than their gender identity. Supporters of the bill claim that it protects people who feel threatened, but these recent comments show the nefarious truth.

The North Carolina Democratic Party has already jumped on Newton’s comments, as spokesman Dave Miranda noted that: “One of the Republican sponsors of HB 2 just admitted the real purpose of the law: to make North Carolina unwelcoming to (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people.” Sign the petition below and make it clear to Senator Newton that his comments will not be tolerated.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Newton,

I am writing to express my disappointment and anger over your recent comments about HB 2, otherwise known as the “bathroom bill.” By saying that North Carolinians must “fight to keep [their] state straight,” you have revealed the true nature of this bill–make the state unwelcoming to the LGBTQ community.

In defense of your discriminatory and homophobic remarks, you claim that “liberals” are “twisting [your] words,” but the comments in question are a direct quotation; there is no need to twist words that you yourself spoke. While it is too late to take back what you’ve said, it is never too late to apologize. Please come forward and own up to the homophobic and repressive nature of your comments.

Sincerely,

  1. I agree they are misinformed about the LGBT community. Discrimination is unfair. And personal bias should be left out. I’m appalled by the ignorance. In society and in politics. When it comes to this issue. It needs to stop somewhere they are people just like everyone else is. And deserve to be treated as equals.
