Target: Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Bangladesh
Goal: Investigate and punish those responsible the murder of LGBTQ activist Julhas Mannan.
One of Bangladesh’s most prominent pro-LGBTQ voices had been silenced as the editor of the country’s only LGBTQ magazine was murdered. According to media and police reports, Julhas Mannan was hacked to death in an apartment in Dhakaan. Mannan served as the editor at Roopbaan, an LGBTQ-friendly publication.
Making this murder more troubling is the emerging trend of violence and repression in Bangladesh. Mannan’s killing came only a few days after suspected Islamist militants hacked a university professor to death, and in the past year, a number of similar attacks have occurred as these militants have targeted several members of religious minority groups, as well as atheist and secular activists.
The targeting of individuals based on their religion or sexual orientation must stop. Sign the petition below and urge the prime minister to investigate this murder and hold those responsible accountable for their crimes.
Dear Minister Hasina,
I am writing to express my serious concern over the murder of Julhas Mannan. Mannan served as the editor at Roopbaan, the country’s sole LGBTQ-friendly publication, and this murder is only one in an emerging and troubling series of similar crimes.
In the past year, a number of similar murders have occurred throughout the country. Militants have targeted several members of religious minority groups, as well as atheist and secular activists. If unpunished, these murderers could become emboldened and continue their pattern of violent religious repression. Please investigate this matter and prosecute those responsible to the full extent of the law.
