Target: Jim Buckmaster, CEO of Craigslist
Goal: Charge rehoming fee on Craigslist to prevent animals from being abused and killed.
Pets are abused and killed on a regular basis as a result of being given away on Craigslist. We need to take action to ensure the lives of many innocent animals are spared.
Some such alleged abuse includes a man dismembering and killing five dogs, kittens being purposely killed and even the torturing and starving of many animals. Dogs have further allegedly been used for fighting other dogs, as well as for bait in dog fights after being given away on Craigslist. Clearly, it cannot be guaranteed that whoever takes the animals will not abuse them.
Although Craigslist warns people about the dangers of giving away animals through its website, the company is still contributing to animal abuse by not requiring people to charge a rehoming fee, as many people looking to abuse animals will likely not bother to purchase them. Urge Craigslist not to allow people to give pets away on their website. If we act now, the lives of many innocent animals may be saved.
Dear Mr. Buckmaster,
Many animals are thought to be abused and killed every day because they are given away on Craigslist. It is important that people be required to charge a rehoming fee when adopting out animals in order to prevent such horrific acts from taking place.
Disgusting examples of reported abuse includes everything from dogs being dismembered to dogs and cats being tortured and starved. People looking to fight dogs are also thought to check the website frequently in order to avoid paying for the animals they plan to abuse. One man even apparently admitted that he killed kittens he had obtained free of charge from the website just because he was angry at others in society. Since there is no way of monitoring what will happen to animals after they are rehomed, giving them away through the website should not be allowed.
Furthermore, since people who plan on abusing animals are more likely to try and get them for free, Craigslist is indirectly contributing to animal cruelty by allowing people to not charge rehoming fees for pets. I therefore urge you to require that people who are looking to rehome animals on Craigslist charge a rehoming fee. If animals continue to be given away, this cycle of abuse will likely not end.
