Applaud the End of Illegal Fishing in Antarctica

Target: Paul Watson, Captain of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Goal: Praise and congratulate Sea Shepherd for shutting down illegal fishing in Antarctica.

One of the most persistent and dedicated environmental protection organizations in the world, Sea Shepherd, recently announced that it has completely shut down illegal fishing in Antarctic waters. Every year for the past decade, six fishing ships, dubbed the “Bandit Six,” laid illegal fishing nets in Antarctic waters, ignoring fishing restrictions and evading law enforcement. Sea Shepherd pursued these vessels until all six were sunk or detained, thus ending illegal fishing in Antarctica.

Sea Shepherd estimates that between 15 and 40 percent of the world’s fish supply is caught illegally. Although various countries and international organizations have established laws restricting certain fishing methods, or fishing in certain areas, the Bandit Six were able to continue fishing illegally because Antarctic waters are so remote.

To obtain their catch, the Bandit Six were using illegal gillnets, or nets that are hung vertically and dragged across large areas of ocean to catch everything in their path. In addition to the fish that the fishermen want, dolphins, sharks, seabirds, and other marine animals are caught in these nets. This method of fishing is extremely destructive to ocean ecosystems.

Sea Shepherd stepped in to enforce international fishing laws when no one else would. The members of the Sea Shepherd crew courageously pursued one of the Bandit Six for 110 days straight. Thanks to their efforts, illegal fishing in Antarctica has ended. Sign the petition below to thank Sea Shepherd for its environmental stewardship.
