Praise Teen’s Legal Victory for Transgender Washroom Rights

Target: Gavin Grimm

Goal: Praise teen for getting court to reconsider high school’s policy restricting transgender bathroom access.

A federal appeals court has ruled that a transgender teen, Gavin Grimm, faced unlawful discrimination by being denied access to bathrooms that correspond to Grimm’s gender identity. Gloucester High School’s decision to bar Grimm from boys’ bathrooms was vindicated by a federal court ruling, but the decision turned in this week points out that the school’s segregation policy constituted a violation of Title IX, a federal law banning discrimination on the basis of sex in educational programs.

Grimm’s victory is a significant one for transgender rights — the appeals court is the highest in the nation to have made a ruling on the matter of transgender students’ access to bathrooms. The triumph comes at an important time as a law recently enacted in North Carolina forces transgender people to use public restrooms that match their biological sex.

Grimm has demonstrated immense bravery in standing up against unfair discrimination and refusing to back down until justice is served. Sign this petition to applaud the Virginia teen for a valiant and extraordinary battle.

Dear Gavin Grimm,

Congratulations on your recent success in the courtroom. Your courageous efforts have been an inspiration for the fight against transgender discrimination.

Thank you for standing up against bigotry and intolerance. Our civil liberties are being threatened daily by discriminatory laws, including one in North Carolina restricting transgender access to public restrooms. In the face of such obstacles, examples like yours are a beacon of light.
