Target: Brian Sandoval, Nevada Governor
Goal: Update prison regulations to disallow the use of birdshot to control inmates.
A recent incident between a prison guard and an inmate led to the death of the inmate just four months prior to his scheduled release. According to reports, the inmate was handcuffed at the time the guard fired birdshot at him. The guard’s actions are sanctioned by current prison regulations as a measure to protect guards and the prison population, however no other state in the nation permits using birdshot to control inmates.
Governor Sandoval has replaced the prison warden involved in the incident, but it’s unclear if the regulations have been altered or if the guards have been told to cease use of birdshot. Demand this regulation is changed to exclude the inhuman practice of firing birdshot at prisoners.
Dear Governor Sandoval,
You recently replaced a prison warden after an inmate died as a result of being shot with birdshot. The guard involved in the incident has been charged and will be tried, but there’s been no indication that the regulation which allows for guards to fire birdshot at inmates has been updated.
No other state in the country permits such barbaric methods of control in their prisons. We demand this regulation is immediately updated to exclude the practice of using birdshot to control prisoners.
