Investigate Improper Destruction of Veterans’ Benefits Claims

Target: United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert A. McDonald

Goal: Investigate reports of systemic destruction of veteran’s benefits claims before benefits can be given.

Department of Veterans Affairs offices have been denying veterans access to benefits by shredding documents related to their claims, according to a series of spot checks at several veterans benefits offices around the country. During the unannounced audits, investigators found that of the 155 claims-related documents that were to be shredded, 69 were incorrectly labeled and should not have been scheduled for destruction.

Such a high percentage suggests that this is not a simple case of employees mishandling documents, but rather a systemic problem–one that is preventing America’s veterans from receiving the benefits that they so rightly deserve. The report concluded that “it is highly likely that claims-related documents … being improperly scheduled for destruction … could result in loss of claims and evidence, incorrect decisions and delays in claims processing.”

The Department of Veterans Affairs has an obligation to care for those who have sacrificed for their country, and any attempt to deny these benefits must be immediately stopped. Sign the petition below to urge the head of the department to investigate the troubling claims made in this report.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. McDonald,

I am writing to express my grave concern about a recent report which revealed the improper destruction of claims-related documents. The high percentage of incorrectly destroyed documents suggests that this is not a simple case of employees mishandling documents, but a systemic problem–one that is preventing America’s veterans from receiving the benefits that they so rightly deserve.

Your department has an obligation to care for those who have sacrificed for their country. These brave men and women have risked their lives for the good of the nation, and any attempt to deny these benefits must be immediately stopped. I insist that you investigate the troubling claims made in the report and immediately put an end to this pattern of improper destruction.

Sincerely,
