Demand Apology from Presidential Hopeful Who Joked About Rape

Target: Rodrigo Duterte, Mayor of Davao City

Goal: Demand an apology from a Philippines presidential hopeful who joked about rape.

A presidential hopeful made a jarring statement claiming that the mayor “should have been first” when referencing a gang rape. The mentioned incident took place in a jail and resulted in the murder of an Australian missionary. Demand an immediate apology for this revolting statement.

“I was angry she was raped, yes that was one thing. But she was so beautiful, I think the mayor should have been first. What a waste,” said Duterte in a YouTube video. The referenced rape took place when jail inmates took a church group hostage, resulting in the assault and death of an Australian missionary. Duterte was mayor at the time of the incident.

“If it brings me down, let it bring me down. If it brings me up to the presidency, then well and good. I will serve you but I will not, as a matter of honor, apologize for (it),” Duterte stated. Sign below and demand an immediate apology for this abhorrent statement.

Dear Mayor Duterte,

Your comment in reference to the horrific gang rape of an Australian missionary is insulting to rape victims everywhere. Rape is never a joke. We demand an immediate apology for this abhorrent statement.

The missionary, who was raped in the Davao City Jail, cannot speak in her own defense. The horrors that she experienced that day, during your first term as mayor, resulted in her death. To reference her death as a joke is inexcusable and we will not stand for it.

Rape is never funny. It destroys lives everyday. We demand an immediate apology and that you pledge to support women’s rights.
