Don’t Make Abortion Patients Take Unnecessary Anesthetics

Target: Utah Governor Gary Herbert

Goal: Repeal law that will force women having abortions after 20 weeks to take unnecessarily risky anesthetics.

Utah Governor Gary Herbert recently signed a law that would require women having abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy to take unnecessary anesthetics that could put the woman at risk. The reason cited for this law is that fetuses feel pain after 20 weeks, which is conjecture with no scientific backing at all. It is obvious that this bill was just designed to make abortion more costly and difficult. Demand that the governor repeal this pseudo-scientific law.

Any doctor will tell you that they would never give anesthetics to someone who does not clearly need them. Anesthetics are powerful drugs that can have dangerous effects on a pregnant woman with health issues, and a doctor would not want to put their patient at risk. But according to the new law, doctors failing to administer anesthetics to patients 20 weeks along would be charged with a third-degree felony.

When a doctor is telling their patient what to expect from the abortion, they will have to tell them about the anesthetics they are required to give. And as any good doctor concerned with the health of their patient would do, they would also inform them of the risks the anesthetics pose. This could discourage women from having an abortion altogether, which prevents them from having ownership of their bodies.

The strongly pro-life governor says that these anesthetics need to be administered because fetuses can feel pain after 20 weeks in the pregnancy. However, there is not a single shred of scientific evidence to back that up. Research from the Journal of the American Medical Association says that, “Little or no evidence addresses the effectiveness of direct fetal anesthetic or analgesic techniques.”

This law proves that Governor Herbert values the imaginary pain of unborn fetuses over the health and decisions of grown women. Sign this petition and tell him that political ideologies should not interfere with medical practice.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Herbert,

Your law that forces doctors to administer anesthetics to women having abortions after 20 weeks is unnecessary and harmful. It is understandable that you wouldn’t want fetuses to feel pain during the procedure, but there is absolutely no scientific evidence that supports that theory. The health of women is more important than your political ideologies; please repeal this law.

Anesthetics that do not directly help the patient can be dangerous to their health, for the drugs are very powerful. Doctors feel like they are hurting their relationship with their patients by administering anesthetics that could harm them. However, they also do not want to be charged with a third-degree felony.

There is no evidence to back up your “fetal pain” theory, and women who seek to have control over their lives and bodies are being put in danger. This law does not help anyone and is completely unnecessary; please repeal it immediately.

Sincerely,
