Shut Down Horse “Death Camp”

Target: Havasupai Reservation Tribal Chairman, Don Watahomigie

Goal: Bar the person responsible for the cruel neglect of horses on the Havasupai Reservation from ever having animals under their care.

Thanks to the recent actions of an organization known as Stop Animal Violence Now, five horses may have a chance at a better quality of life. The animals belong to a man named Leland Joe, who works in the tourism industry on the Havasupai Indian Reservation and uses the animals to transport tourists who come to view the reservation’s spectacular scenery. The horses were reportedly found on Joe’s property extremely malnourished and riddled with open sores.

Joe faces a myriad of charges regarding what appears to be the reckless and deliberate denial of medical attention which would have prevented animal suffering. Stop Animal Violence Now called Joe’s business a “death camp” and has been keeping a keen eye on the pack animal industry that the entire tribe relies so heavily upon.

The Havasupai Indian Reservation lies deep in the gorge of the Grand Canyon and its economy relies as much on tourism as it does horse labor. Lt. Scott Small reported that he had approached Joe several times concerning the horses’ condition. Small was turned away when he offered to buy the horses from Joe and pay for their medical bills.

Join us and urge officials to rule that the person responsible for these cruel business practices be barred from ever having another animal under their care.

Dear Mr. Watahomigie,

When one’s economy relies so heavily upon the backs of pack animals, it is vital to ensure that said animals have a decent quality of life. Recently, a member of your tribe named Leland Joe allegedly subjected his horses to starvation and neglect.

Horses are precious creatures and rely on us as much as we rely upon them. This neglect was not a secret and continued for months before an outside organization finally aided in its end.

Please set an example and show others that these cruel practices will not be tolerated on the Havasupai Indian Reservation. I urge you to bar the person responsible for the cruelty to Joe’s horses from ever again keeping animals under their care.

  1. Expected better from a Native community. No excuse or justification for cruelty to animals depending on human care. Shameful.

  2. S.Browning says:

Please treat horses with kindness and stop abusing them.

  3. If that isn’t the oxymoron of DELIBERATE AND INTENTIONAL ‘neglect,’ I don’t know what is! Get those poor animals away from this a-hole (and put them up for screened adoption, toss his beastly ass in jail, fine him heavily, and impose a lifelong ban on keeping ANY animal from now on. Or let HIM starve to death – your choice.

I’m sorry, but it’s well known that Indian Reservations are among the WORST places to expect much animal “welfare.” Just ask all the rescue organizations that deal with this issue on a continual basis.

So much for living with and caring for nature. This is unconscionable, and all of the synonyms : unethical, amoral, immoral, unprincipled, indefensible, unforgivable, wrong!

  6. “The only difference between a dog, cat, horse and dolphin and a cow, chicken, pig and turkey is perception. One is no more valuable than another. And yet in this culture, we hold the former animals in high esteem and the latter we brutalize for food. All animals are deserving of respect and freedom from violence. The way to respect others is veganism.”

  7. Thank you so much for doing this, but please contact asap. We have important updated information and would like to talk to you. See and

    Thank you!

I live in Arizona. If one googles Havasupai Reservation, there is a long list of animal abuse going back for years. I don’t understand why anyone would abuse/neglect animals and I don’t care to understand why, because there is NO reason, only excuses.

Time to crack down on animal abuse. If you can’t treat them properly and take good care of them, you don’t deserve them and should have them taken away. If they are starving or otherwise injured from abuse/neglect, you should go to jail, pay a big fine, AND pay for all costs related to the rehabilitation, or other costs, involved in their care caused by such abuse/neglect. NO ONE has the right to abuse/neglect another living being in their ‘care’. Period.

  10. It’s unexcusable. This animal cruelty, neglect and abuse plain and simple.
