Target: Missouri Senate President Pro. Temp. Ron Richard

Goal: Prevent a Planned Parenthood President from going to jail for protecting patients’ privacy.

The president of Planned Parenthood in Missouri is currently being threatened with jail time if she does not turn over medical records of all patients who have had abortions for the past six years. According to Think Progress, a committee called the Sanctity of Life Committee in the Missouri State Senate subpoenaed these documents to try to prove that Planned Parenthood was selling fetal organs. St. Louis Planned Parenthood President Mary Kogut refused to turn over the documents, because the subpoena violates doctor-patient confidentiality and federal medical privacy laws. The Sanctity of Life Committee now wants to hold Kogut in contempt of court, and possibly send her to jail.

Ever since the Center for Medical Progress released highly edited videos making the false claim that Planned Parenthood sells fetal organs, Republicans have been launching vicious legal attacks against Planned Parenthood, its employees, and its patients. Planned Parenthood has been investigated and cleared by Missouri’s Attorney General, and yet these senators are carrying on their witch hunt. The documents that they want from Planned Parenthood contain personal information about hundreds of patients, and the committee has not said what it will do with the information, so there is no guarantee that it will not be made public.

By refusing to comply with this subpoena, Mary Kogut is protecting the privacy rights of Planned Parenthood’s patients, but if the Missouri State Senate votes to hold Kogut in contempt of court, she could face a $300 fine and up to 10 days in jail.

Mary Kogut should not be punished for protecting Planned’s Parenthood’s patients. Sign the petition below to tell Missouri senators to end their senseless attack against women’s health care and privacy rights.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Richard,

As you are already aware, the Sanctity of Life Committee in the Missouri State Senate recently voted to hold St. Louis Planned Parenthood President Mary Kogut in contempt of court for refusing to comply with a subpoena that demands the medical records of hundreds of patients who have had abortions. The entire Missouri State Senate will vote on this matter soon, and I am urging you and your colleagues to vote against it.

It is time for the senseless attacks against Planned Parenthood to end. The Missouri Attorney General has already investigated Planned Parenthood and found no evidence of wrongdoing. Planned Parenthood has been investigated and cleared by authorities in a dozen other states. And yet, legislators continue to try to prove that Planned Parenthood is somehow breaking the law.

This subpoena from the Sanctity of Life Committee is only the latest in a series of attempts to intimidate Planned Parenthood executives and violate the rights of its patients. Mary Kogut is doing the right thing by refusing to release patients’ private information. Do not punish her for standing up for the privacy rights of Planned Parenthood patients.

I strongly urge you to vote against a resolution to find Mary Kogut in contempt of court, and to encourage your colleagues in the Missouri State Senate to do the same.

Sincerely,
