Target: Zhou Qiang, President of the Supreme People’s Court of China
Goal: Demand that China legalize same-sex-marriage following the rejection of the first marriage equality lawsuit.
China’s first case for same-sex marriage has been rejected. Demand that China reconsider this historic case and support LGBT rights.
In a bold move, a gay couple filed a civil suit after authorities refused to acknowledge their relationship status. The first case of its kind, this lawsuit challenged China’s long-held anti-homosexual sentiments. Homosexuality is still considered a mental illness by much of China’s medical community. Homosexual people are also discriminated against in the workplace and at university level.
The LGBT community in China has been put down for too long. Sign below and demand that the court support this case upon appeal and fight for LGBT rights.
Dear President Zhou,
Freedom and equality are in question today after a Chinese homosexual couple was denied the legal recognition of marriage. This is the first of many cases that will soon surface regarding gay marriage and LGBT rights. We demand that you reconsider this case upon appeal and support LGBT rights.
China has long been known for its anti-gay sentiments. An alarming 67 percent of Chinese medical professionals still consider homosexuality a disease to be cured. Discrimination continues to thrive against homosexual people in workplaces and universities.
While this was a crushing blow, the LGBT community is not giving up. We urge you to stand behind this couple and pave a new path of acceptance in China.
