Target: Michael Fitts, President of Tulane Univeristy
Goal: Remove wall with racist slogans on it from around fraternity house.
The Kappa Alpha fraternity at Tulane University has recently put up a wall around their fraternity’s house with references to Donald Trump’s campaign to deport immigrants. The wall is made up of sandbags with “Make America Great Again” and “Trump” painted on it. This wall is supporting presidential candidate Donald Trump’s malevolent plan that would ruin the lives of immigrants around the country. The fraternity, predominantly composed of privileged white students, shouldn’t be supporting a policy that is threatening the lives of millions of minorities.
Donald Trump has generalized Mexicans by calling them rapists and accusing them of bringing drugs into the country. He also called for the deportation of law abiding Muslims on the basis of their religion. By writing “Make America Great Again” on their wall, the Kappa Alpha fraternity is echoing Trump’s sentiments. It is saying that Latinos and Muslims are not welcome in the United States, and America will once again be “great” if they are removed from the country. This kind of hatred and bigotry cannot be tolerated. Sign this petition to remove the wall.
Dear President Fitts,
As you no doubt know, a fraternity associated with your university recently erected a wall on which members wrote hateful slogans connected to the Donald Trump campaign. This symbol of hatred has caused a lot anger among students at Tulane University, and rightfully so. College campuses are places where people of all different backgrounds come together to further their education. Electing to maintain this wall, that represents hatred towards particular minority groups, will only cause more damage.
Tulane University is an 80 percent white institution, so minorities are already marginalized. I am sure that the few people at this predominantly white university who will defend this wall will bring up freedom of speech. However, white people do not have to walk by this wall with a sense of fear. A sense that they are not welcome on this campus, or in this country. Speech that is fueled by hatred cannot be tolerated.
Muslims and Latinos are the minority groups most vehemently attacked by Trump and his supporters. It is terrifying to think that Muslim and Latino students will have to walk by this wall, knowing that some of the students they go to class with and are around every day support their removal from the country.
This wall represents nothing but hatred and ignorance and has created an unsafe environment on campus. We demand that it be removed immediately.
