Stop Cattle Ranchers from Destroying Amazon Rainforest

Target: Mónica Julissa De Los Rios de Leal, Head of the Regulatory Department of Environmental Services, Institute of Climate Change
Goal: Protect 500,000 acres of rainforest from giant cattle ranch.

Cattle Ranchers across Brazil want to convert wide swaths of rainforest into giant ranches that would decimate the environment. For every 500,000 acres stripped of forest and converted to grazing pasture, approximately 12.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions are released into atmosphere, as well as destroying the habitat for an extraordinary amount of wildlife and plant biodiversity.

Much of the world’s tropical rainforests have either been cut down or are directly threatened with imminent deforestation. Deforestation and forest degradation have resulted in species loss and direct contribution to global warming. Moreover, deforestation accounts for over 20 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions – more than the entire global transportation sector.

Putting a stop to these ranchers’ projects would not only reduce carbon dioxide emissions, but it would also save numerous bird species and exotic wildlife. Stopping the ranches would also protect threatened tree species, improve local water quality, retain topsoil, and control erosion. We must take action now to stop these destructive cattle ranches.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mónica Julissa De Los Rios de Leal,

Cattle ranchers are planning on converting a large portion of rainforest into a giant ranch. This would decimate the environment by releasing 12.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. It would also destroy the habitat for an extraordinary amount of wildlife and plant biodiversity.

Please help us put a stop to these ranchers’ projects in order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and save numerous bird species and exotic wildlife. Stopping the ranches would also protect threatened tree species, improve local water quality, retain topsoil, and control erosion. Please help us take action now to stop these destructive cattle ranches.

Sincerely,

Meat production and animal agriculture – the bane of the planet along with human overpopulation. A meat free diet is essential to protect the planet and the natural world.

    • it’s not just flesh that is at issue-dairy and eggs are just as bad if not worse, especially from the ethical and health aspects.

      • Jane Morrow says:

I agree. Apart from the ethical issues, dairy farming wastes huge amounts of water and pollutes rivers and streams. This is becoming a big issue in New Zealand too.

  3. “Aren’t humans amazing? They kill wildlife – birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed. Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative – and fatal – health conditions like heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and cancer. So then humans spend billions of dollars torturing and killing millions more animals to look for cures for these diseases. Elsewhere, millions of other human beings are being killed by hunger and malnutrition because food they could eat is being used to fatten domestic animals. Meanwhile, few people recognize the absurdity of humans, who kill so easily and violently, and once a year send out cards praying for “Peace on Earth.”~ David Coates

    • Markgil, thank you — I wish your words could be printed on the front page of every newspaper in the world — and the shocking part is, it doesn’t even take much awareness to see the painfully clear truth of your words, yet the problem is, most people don’t want to see, and they want to stay in oblivion… I also have seen “Cowspiracy,” and I keep wondering why this documentary is not more well known by now? The other sad reality is that if I give people a flyer or tell them even part of what you said above, most people are strangely apathetic, or don’t believe that
one person becoming vegetarian could make a differ-
ence! But if our country’s President gave a speech
saying what you said above, many people would listen
and perhaps then take action…or if Church leaders
stood up and spoke it, more people would wake up….
Such are the painful realities of this Truth….

Tying in with your comments, have noticed how prevalent it is these days for someone somewhere to say publicly, “X should be KILLED”? I’ve heard it enough times to make me wonder why there is so much eagerness to kill. Maybe it always was like that and I just never noticed. But it sounds quite mad. And then you have everyday people who seem harmless and nice, who are yet ignorant of the fact that they are perpetuating terrible suffering in the world on a daily basis by eating meat and using products tested on animals. So that massive level of existence is actually rotten under the surface. Almost equivalent to the Nazis having won the war and continuing to murder the next inferior group, and making soap and lampshades out of them, and which otherwise respectable families then happily consume on a daily basis, whilst nevertheless having the preconception that they are good and something other than animal, maybe rather angels or gods.

  4. Only greed and ignorance mows down the lungs of the world.
