Target: BS Sidhu, Director General of Police, Uttarakhand, India

Goal: Find and bring to justice the poacher responsible for killing police officer Anant Kumar Yadav.

A police officer was killed by a gunshot while attempting to arrest suspected wildlife poachers. Anant Kumar Yadav and three other officers of a Special Task Force unit were responding to a tip about an illegal wildlife trade in Uttarakhand, India, and found three men with a leopard skin and antlers from barasingha–swamp deer considered vulnerable. While the officers succeeded in seizing the wildlife parts, the poachers managed to escape and Yadav lost his life during the struggle.

The suspects appeared to be waiting for their clients, and according to The Times of India, a fight broke out while they were being questioned. Two other members of the gang were hiding in the surrounding jungle and started pelting stones at the officers. During the struggle that followed, a poacher named Sunder Singh Bisht allegedly resisted arrest and shot Officer Yadav in the chest with his own pistol before fleeing with the others. Yadav was later pronounced dead at the Uttarkashi district hospital. According to his fellow Special Task Force members, Yadav was an expert in battling the liquor and drug mafia as well as animal poachers.

The killing and trade of endangered wildlife is illegal, and the poachers must be tracked down and held responsible for their actions. Bisht is responsible not only for illegal wildlife trade but for the death of a police officer as well, and must be brought to justice. Sign the petition below to urge Uttarakhand law enforcement to make the hunt for these men a priority and ensure that Officer Yadav receives the justice he deserves.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director General Sidhu,

Police officer Anant Kumar Yadav was shot and killed by suspected wildlife poachers during an attempted arrest, and deserves justice for his death. The Special Task Force unit was responding to a tip about an illegal wildlife trade in Uttarakhand, where three men were discovered with a leopard skin and the antlers from a vulnerable species of swamp deer. While the officers succeeded in seizing the wildlife parts, the poachers managed to escape.

The suspects were found waiting for their clients, and a fight broke out while the Special Task Force officers were questioning them. Two other members of the poacher gang started pelting stones from hiding, and a fight broke out during which Yadav was reportedly shot in the chest by Sunder Singh Bisht. Bisht managed to flee with the others, while Yadav was later pronounced dead.

According to his fellow officers, Yadav was an expert in battling the liquor and drug mafia as well as animal poachers, and it is tragic that his killer has gone free. Bisht appears to be responsible for the death of a police officer as well as illegal wildlife trade, and he and the other poachers must be brought to justice. I am urging you to make the search for these men a priority. Please take action to ensure that Yadav’s alleged killer is brought to justice.

Sincerely,
