Target: Ron Bigelow, Mayor of West Valley City, Utah
Goal: Investigate accusations and update police sexual harassment policy to include harassment by same gender individuals.
Patrol officer Michelle Shepherd has filed a claim accusing Lieutenant Julie Jorgensen of sexual harassment lasting several years. Shepherd claims the harassment began a few months after being hired and has continued to this day, despite reporting incidents to higher up officers.
Shepherd alleges that Jorgensen inappropriately touched her and made sexual remarks in front of other officers. Shepherd further states that when Jorgensen became her supervisor, the harassment grew to include unfair and unwarranted punishments. Shepherd told her lawyer that she reported these incidents to other superiors, who did not take a formal report or open an investigation.
Shepherd believes her accusations are being taken less seriously because she’s accusing another woman of sexual harassment. She believes that if she were accusing a man, those claims would have been immediately investigated and addressed. Demand claims of same gender sexual harassment are taken seriously and that police policies are update to include same gender harassment.
Dear Mayor Bigelow,
A female officer in West Valley City alleges she’s been the victim of sexual harassment by another female officer for many years. Patrol officer Michelle Shepherd claims she reported numerous instances of sexual harassment to superior officers who did not open a formal investigation into Lt. Julie Jorgensen’s behavior. Shepherd says the harassment included inappropriate touching and sexual comments in front of other officers.
We demand these accusations are immediately investigated and that police policies are updated to include same gender sexual harassment.
