Ban the Cruel Grand National Horse Race

Target: John Whittingdale, U.K. Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sports

Goal: Ban the Grand National race which causes several horse deaths each year.

Four horses have already died at this year’s Grand National horse race. The annual event held at the Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool in the U.K. regularly results in serious injuries and deaths for the horses involved. In just the first two days of this year’s Grand National, four horses have sustained fatal injuries and had to be put down.

Over 60 percent of horses bred by the racing industry are considered unfit for racing and sent to slaughter or otherwise discarded. The ones who do make it to the races are whipped, beaten, drugged and forced to race to exhaustion. Many sustain severe injuries to their legs, often from having been forced to train too early, and others suffer from cardiac or respiratory issues. Countless racing horses are killed each year when they sustain injuries or their performance wanes.

Sign this petition urging the government to take horse welfare seriously by banning the Grand National and other horse races around the country.

Dear Mr. Whittingdale,

Four horses have died in the first two days of this year’s Grand National. A sport which features unwilling participants who are whipped to the finish line and put down when their performance wanes is not really a sport, and is a completely unacceptable way of treating sentient beings.

The horse racing industry destroys 60 percent of the animals it breeds before they ever make it to the racecourse. The remaining horses are whipped, beaten, drugged and otherwise mistreated. They are forced to race to exhaustion, sustaining severe injuries for which they are then put down. When horses no longer perform adequately, they are sent to slaughter.

It is high time to put an end to this outdated sport. Please take the welfare of horses seriously and ban the Grand National along with all other horse races.

  2. It’s NOT entertainment, so ignorant, what’s wrong with those people?

  3. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  4. End any form of animal entertainment. These animals DON’T want to be pushed, prodded, drugged & abused for human greed/entertainment.
