Don’t Cut Funding for Vital Social Programs

don't cut vital social programs illinois seth perlman

Target: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner

Goal: Protect vital social programs including HIV and autism treatment from budget cuts.

In an attempt to ameliorate some of Illinois’ $1.6 billion debt load, Governor Bruce Rauner recently cut $26 million in funding for vital social programs. Grants for services ranging from HIV treatment to assistance for the homeless have been suspended without the consent of voters. Attempting to balance the budget in this way is an irresponsible and inconsiderate move by Governor Rauner. Though Illinois certainly faces a budget crisis, it cannot and should not be solved merely by cutting funding for important services in a hasty fashion. Illinois should protect its vital social programs, not defund them.

Cutting these services will only make it harder for many residents of Illinois to get by, consequently hurting the state’s economy in the process. Moreover, a vast majority of those living in Illinois who will be affected by Governor Rauner’s budget cuts are those in the most vulnerable positions. By defunding grants for Immigration Integration Services, after-school activities in poor neighborhoods, autism treatment resources, and other social programs, Rauner is turning his back on Illinois residents who deserve and need to be helped.

It is unfair to punish the residents of Illinois for the failures of their state government. By cutting millions of dollars in funding for vital social programs, Governor Rauner is sending a clear message to the people of Illinois that he doesn’t care about their needs. This is unacceptable. Furthermore, cutting funding for these services will ultimately hurt the state’s economy. Rauner must uphold his responsibility to his state’s residents by restoring funding for these vital social programs.

By signing the petition below, you can help urge Governor Rauner to reinstate grants for vital social programs in his state.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Rauner,

Your plan to cut $26 million in funding for vital social programs is a grave mistake. Illinois’ budgetary crisis will not be solved by cutting these crucial services. This move will only hurt the people of Illinois, further worsening the state’s economic situation. It is economically irresponsible and morally wrong to make life even harder for the most vulnerable residents of Illinois. You must restore funding for your state’s vital social programs.

It is your responsibility as the Governor of Illinois to serve the people of your state. Suspending grants for services that help those in need is an affront to that obligation.

Illinois’ budget should not be balanced at the expense of Illinois’ residents. I urge you to immediately reinstate grants for vital social programs in Illinois.

Sincerely,
