Don’t Allow Guns on College Campuses

Target: Georgia Governor Nathan Deal

Goal: Veto bill that would allow college students to carry guns on campus.

A recently-passed bill in Georgia would give college students the right to carry guns on campus, creating an unnecessary safety hazard for thousands of students and professors. The bill, titled HB 859,would allow college students in Georgia 21 years of age or older to carry concealed weapons on campus except in student housing and athletic events. Making the situation even more disturbing is the bill’s similarity to one passed in Texas. A troubling trend is emerging, and it must be stopped.

College campuses are meant to be places of learning, not violence. There is simply no need for a student to bring a gun to class, no matter how responsible and well-trained he or she may be. Response to the bill has been overwhelmingly negative–school newspaper polls have shown most students do not agree with the policy, and at least one professor has already resigned because of HG 859.

In order to become law, the bill must be signed by Georgia’s governor. Sign the letter below and urge the governor to veto this bill and protect students from needless and preventable violence.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Deal,

I am writing to express my grave concern over the recent approval of a bill that would give college students in your state the right to carry firearms on campus. If this bill were to become law, it would create an unnecessary safety hazard for thousands of students and professors. College campuses are meant to be places of learning, not violence. There is simply no need for a student to bring a gun to class, no matter how responsible and well-trained he or she may be.

Response to the bill has been overwhelmingly negative–school newspaper polls have shown most students do not agree with the policy, and at least one professor has already resigned because of the potential changes. Please veto this bill and keep the residents of your state safe from preventable and needless acts of violence.

Sincerely,
