Better Animal Welfare Standards Needed in Organic Agriculture

Target: Miles McEvoy, chief of the USDA’s National Organic Program

Goal: Implement better animal welfare standards in the organic food industry and animal agriculture as a whole.

A proposal to strengthen animal welfare standards in organic chicken production put forth by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) must be carried through and expanded to apply to all animals raised for food. Animals used in meat, dairy and egg production suffer confinement, mutilation, abuse and slaughter. While all sections of the industry desperately need reform, the Organic Program must ensure its proposal for improved standards is implemented so that these can be spread to the entire industry.

The rapid expansion of the organic market proves that consumers are increasingly seeking out healthier and more sustainable food sources. In this regard, the Organic Program should also focus on encouraging producers and consumers to move away from detrimental animal products and toward environmentally friendly, cruelty-free and healthier plant-based foods.

Sign this petition demanding that plans to strengthen organic animal welfare are implemented and spread to the entire industry and urge the agricultural department to promote a plant-based diet.

Dear Mr. McEvoy,

Your proposal to tighten animal welfare regulations in organic meat production must be implemented to ensure better care for animals in organic agriculture. Hopefully, these improved standards can then spread to the entire animal agriculture industry, in which animals endure tremendous suffering for the production of meat, dairy and eggs.

Organic agriculture’s increasing success proves that consumers desire healthy and sustainable foods. I urge you to encourage producers and consumers to move away from harmful animal products to focus instead on growing and consuming cruelty-free foods. Please vow to promote plant-based foods while continuing to push for better standards in animal agriculture.
