Target: Police commissioner Bill Bratton, NY
Goal: Terminate the officer who murdered a family pet.
Mounted security footage revealed an New York Police Department (NYPD) officer firing his gun upon a pit bull inside of an apartment building in the Bronx recently.
In early February, security camera footage captured the shocking sequence of events that led to the execution of a pit bull named Spike. The dog’s owner, Yvonne Rosado, recalls the haunting event with clarity. The officers were responding to a complaint when they knocked on Rosado’s door and Spike began to bark. Rosado called out to the officers, assuring them that her pet was friendly. Only ten seconds later would Spike lay dead in the hallway.
If this footage had not been revealed, the officer could have not faced any penalty. Pit pulls already have an unfounded negative connotation and it would not have been hard to write it off as self defense. However, the footage reveals that Spike squeezed his way past Rosado and was clearly excited to see the officer. Spike approached the officer with an enthusiastically wagging tail, which continued throughout the events and stopped with the dog’s last breaths.
Rosado reported that the officer immediately drew his gun and fired on her beloved dog. As shown in the video, the string of events happened so quickly that it is clear very little thought was put into this violent and unnecessary action. Rosado and her neighbors surrounded the dying dog. When she attempted to confront the offending officer, she was pinned brutally to the stairs by three officers.
It has been over two months since Spike’s death and NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton has only reported the ongoing internal investigation. Action needs to be taken to make sure that further events such as these do not occur. Sign this petition and urge the commissioner to follow through with this issue and terminate the trigger-happy officer.
Dear Commissioner Bratton,
Due to an incident involving one of your officers in a Bronx apartment building in which said officer shot a nonthreatening animal exhibiting zero signs of aggression in the head at point blank range, we urge you to take steps in terminating the officer’s employment with the New York Police Department. Actions such as these are unacceptable for a public servant and upholder of the law.
To not terminate this officer would be sending a message that all pit bulls wear a target simply for existing, and that a violent attitude towards animals is tolerated. We urge you to not contribute to furthering the negative public perspective regarding pit bulls. We urge you to send a message that unwarranted animal violence will not be tolerated within your jurisdiction.
