Target: Francois Hollande, President of France
Goal: Hold French peacekeepers responsible for alleged sexual abuses committed in the Central African Republic.
Allegations of sexual assault by French and United Nations peacekeepers in the Central African Republic continue to surface despite previous efforts to stop the sickening practice. The U.N. recently announced 108 new sexual abuse cases, the vast majority of which were reported by minors. While the U.N. has made efforts to stop these disturbing assaults, including firing the person in charge of the mission, the attacks have been going on for over two years and new cases continue to emerge.
The newest round of allegations include forced bestiality, forced prostitution, and rape. One of the more shocking accounts detailed a French mission commander tying up and undressing four young girls and forcing them to have sex with a dog. Both U.N. forces and French forces, known as Sangaris, have faced accusations of the rape of children as young as six.
The U.N. has repeatedly failed to make any progress in stopping these vile assaults against vulnerable people. According to an independent report, both the French government and the U.N. failed to take appropriate action to nip the assaults in the bud when allegations first began emerging in 2014. The abuses have since greatly risen in number.
According to U.N. rules, the countries from which peacekeepers are deployed are responsible for investigating any allegations of wrongdoing. So far, the French government has made an insufficient effort to investigate and prosecute those accused of humanitarian abuses. Sign the petition below to demand that the French government hold its peacekeepers accountable for any and all crimes committed while deployed.
Dear President Hollande,
Over 100 new allegations of sexual assault by French and U.N. peacekeepers in the Central African Republic have surfaced. The accusations include a French mission commander forcing four young girls to have sex with a dog. France has not only failed to punish those responsible for previous assaults, but has not made sufficient strides toward eliminating the rampant rape and prostitution of women and children.
These accusations are disgusting and must be met with harsh punishments for anyone responsible. In order to protect the vulnerable citizens of the Central African Republic, France must act immediately. We, the undersigned, demand a thorough investigation into these claims, and ask that any soldier found guilty of wrongdoing is punished to the full extent of the law.
