Demand Climate Change Science Be Taught In Schools And Keep Out Right Wing Pseudo Science Propaganda

Target:  National Center for Science Education

Goal:  Ensure climate change is taught as a science, not as a conspiracy theory.

Earlier this month it was thought that The Heartland Institute was developing global warming curriculum for elementary schools that would teach climate science from a controversial viewpoint. The investigation is ongoing, but it seems that documents were illegally obtained, forged, and leaked to the press. Material released described how The Heartland Institute, a right wing, and corporate backed group, was planning to undermine science and hijack our children’s education by disseminating modules to elementary schools undermining the science behind climate change and proposing the whole phenomenon is false. Even if events unfold to show there are no immediate plans now, there certainly could be in the future based on Heartlands views on science, climate change, and there track record on past issues.

There is no scientific debate over whether or not climate change is occurring. There is measurable evidence to show that temperatures are increasing in correlation to human activities. The Heartland Institute is a right wing think tank funded by the Koch Foundation, Philip Morris, Exxon Mobil, and other politically conservative corporations. In the past they have questioned the link between smoking and health risks and now there is the issue of teaching our nations youth that climate change does not exist.

This is a preemptive strike to ensure that Heartland stays out of science education. With cuts in budget, emphasis on English and math, and inadequate science training for many elementary school teachers it is crucial that non-science organizations like Heartland stay out of our schools.

By signing this petition you are urging the National Center for Science Education to defend the teaching of climate SCIENCE in the classroom as it has long done for the teaching of evolution.

PETITION LETTER

Dear National Center for Science Education,

Documents thought to be from The Heartland Institute recently came out indicating that they were developing global warming curriculum for elementary schools that would teach climate science from a controversial viewpoint. Even if the investigation reveals that documents were deceptively obtained and forged it is still crucial that we preempt any plans to implement curriculum that would undermine the science behind climate change. As an organization that has stood strong in the defense of teaching evolution we ask that you do the same for climate science. There is no scientific debate over whether or not climate change is occurring. Our children deserve to be equipped with accurate information based on scientific evidence, especially since they are the generations that will be faced with finding solutions.

The Heartland Institute is a right wing, and corporate backed group that has a track record including denying the link between smoking and health risks. With cuts in school budgets, emphasis on English and math, and inadequate training for many elementary school teachers it is imperative that non-science organizations like Heartland stay out of our schools.

We must defend science in the classroom. Please tell The Heartland Institute to stop any plans to develop climate change curriculum, and to stay out of science education.

Sincerely,
