Provide Urgent Care to Prisoner with Life-Threatening Condition

Thomas Anderson

Target: Ayatollah Sadegh Larijani, Head of the Judiciary

Goal: Provide urgent medical care to an Iranian prisoner who has been denied adequate care on several occasions.

Prisoner Afshin Sohrabzadeh is in urgent need of medical care for a life-threatening gastrointestinal condition. He has reportedly been denied medical care on several previous occasions for either no reason or unacceptable reasons, and he needs medical attention as quickly as possible. Sign the petition and demand that he be given the care he requires.

Sohrabzadeh, who is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence for “enmity against God,” has been kept in “internal exile” for more than four years. Prisoners who have been internally exiled are sent to prisons in incredibly remote areas of the country.  This situation has made it incredibly difficult for Sohrabzadeh to access adequate medical care.

Things are so bad, in fact, that even prison officials have requested that he be moved to a more centralized location. The prosecutor’s office has twice denied these requests. On the first occasion, no reason was given. On the second, Sohrabzadeh’s family was unable to pay the exorbitant medical fees (about $20,000 U.S.) that authorities demanded from them. It is the responsibility of the state to provide for the healthcare of all prison inmates; the fees Sohrabzadeh’s family was ordered to pay were blatantly illegal.

Sohrabzadeh is currently suffering from a number of ailments. In addition to his gastrointestinal issues, which include bleeding and dangerous drops in blood pressure, he suffers from “respiratory, renal, and urinary tract health problems,” Amnesty International reports. These health issues were allegedly brought on by beatings and torture Sohrabzadeh suffered after his arrest.

Prisoners have a fundamental right to adequate medical care, and it is the responsibility of the state to provide it to them, no matter what their crime or sentence. Sign the petition and demand health care for Afshin Sohrabzadeh.

PETITION LETTER:

Your Excellency,

I am writing to implore you to  provide immediate and adequate medical care to Afshin Sohrabzadeh, a prisoner who suffers from life-threatening gastrointestinal problems. He has been denied care twice in the past and desperately needs medical attention.

Sohrabzadeh is being held in internal exile in Minab Prison. His condition is so dire that prison officials have requested he be moved to a more centralized prison where he will have better access to healthcare. These requests have twice been denied by the prosecutor’s office. No reason was given on the first occasion, but on the second authorities told Sohrabzadeh’s family to pay 700 million Rials in medical fees, a blatantly illegal order. Sohrabzadeh’s family was unable to afford the expense, and Sohrabzadeh continues to go without treatment.

In addition to his gastrointestinal issues, which cause bleeding and severe drops in blood pressure, Sohrabzadeh suffers from “respiratory, renal, anad urinary tract health problems” brought on by the beating Sohrabzadeh suffered in detention after his arrest, Amnesty International reports.

I implore you to take the immediate action this situation warrants. Get Afshhin Sohrabzadeh the medical care he so desperately needs, investigate his allegations of torture, and bring those responsible to justice.

Sincerely,
