Target: Michael Goldsmith, Chief of Police for Norfolk Police Department
Goal: Demand justice for woman shot and killed while in possession of a fake gun.
India M. Beaty was shot and killed in Norfolk Virginia by officers while in possession of a fake gun. Beaty was involved in an argument with a man and pulled out the fake weapon when officers arrived on the scene. Officers demanded Beaty drop the weapon and she made what they called a “threatening motion.” The officers then proceeded to shoot and kill Beaty at the young age of 25.
The officers did not shoot to disarm Beaty which they should be trained to do. They shot with fatal intent without knowledge of the situation. Who is to stay the man Beaty was arguing with was not the threat? A “threatening motion” is not a call for murder.
Sign this petition and demand the Chief of Police look over the situation and punish his officers where punishment is due. It is an officer’s job to protect their community, not pose a threat to the lives of those within it.
Dear Chief Goldsmith,
I am writing you today because I am shocked at the outcome of an incident involving your officers and 25-year-old India Beaty. Beaty was in an argument with a man and pulled out a fake gun when your officers arrived at the scene. Upon Beaty making a “threatening motion,” your officers shot and killed her.
I am disappointed that murder was the only solution your officers could find to the situation. Are they not trained to de-escalate intense situations without the use of violence? Why did they not shoot to simply disarm Beaty, and instead shoot fatally? All of these questions and more need to be answered. I demand your officers meet appropriate consequences for their actions and actions are taken to ensure this does not happen again.
