Stop Japanese Whaling in the Antarctic Sanctuary

Target: President of the United Nations General Assembly, Mogens Lykketoft.

Goal: Stop Japanese whale hunting in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary.

Japan plans to enact a mass murder of 4,000 minke whales in the Antarctic over the course of the next 12 years. Despite a ruling of the International Court of Justice in 2014 banning Japanese whaling activities in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary, Japan barely took a year off from whaling. With the 2015-2016 season Japan began the implementation of the 12 year program. Japan has declared intentions to become the number one major whaling power on earth, but must be made to see that this is not only illegal, but unwanted.

The brutal program took the lives of 333 Minke whales during the year 2015-2016, 157 of which were pregnant females. Not only is Japan spitting in the face of the legal body that it claims to be a part of, they are not even pretending to be doing sustainable whaling practices. Whale numbers are uncertain, but Japan confidently claims that their practices are completely sustainable, though there is a distinct lack of evidence to support the claim.

There is no need to bring back the whaling industry on a national or international scale. Japan needs to be made aware of the fact that there are ramifications for ignoring the multiple legal bans on Japanese whaling practices in the Antarctic whale preserve.

By signing the petition below you will help urge the President of the United Nations General Assembly to hold Japan accountable for breaking international law.

Dear President of the United Nations General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft,

The extensive whaling plan that Japan intends to enact in the Antarctic is explicitly banned, and has been ruled to be unscientific and illegal by the International Court of Justice. Their intention to hunt down 4,000 mink whales will do irreparable damage to the whale populations. Japanese whaling ships brought in 333 minke whales during the 2015-2016 season, 157 of which were pregnant females.

This indiscriminate wholesale slaughter is an attempt to break open the whaling industry anew, with Japan having a strong head start on any potential competition. It is a thinly veiled lie to call it scientific, and the International Court of Justice agreed, establishing an explicit ban against any Japanese whaling in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary.

I am urging you to save the 4,000 minke whales planned on being slaughtered over the next 12 years, and to punish Japan for breaking international law. Please take action against Japanese whaling ships hunting in the Antarctic despite the moratorium and the explicit ban by the ICJ.
