Target: Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James B. Comey
Goal: Reveal methods used for hacking Apple iPhone, owned by San Bernardino shooter, in order to prevent a security breach.
The FBI is refusing to reveal the methods it used to unlock an iPhone 5c, which belonged to one of the San Bernardino shooters, without the help of Apple. This leaves one of the world’s leading tech companies unaware of a potential vulnerability that could affect millions of users. In the aftermath of the shootings in California, the agency had requested Apple’s help in accessing information stored on the phone, but Apple refused on the grounds that if a method were developed, it could fall into the wrong hands and create a massive security issue.
No matter what justification the FBI chooses to use for its actions, it must, at the very least, reveal its method for hacking the phone. The agency is hardly the only intelligence agency in the world, and if they are capable of accessing the phone, so too are other more malicious governments and organizations. The FBI has proven that Apple products can be hacked, and now it must help prevent future breaches. Sign the petition and urge their cooperation in this matter.
Dear Director Comey,
I am writing to express my grave concern over your agency’s recent hacking of an iPhone 5c that belonged to one of the San Bernardino shooters. While the information on this phone may be of national security, the violation of privacy has sent the message to the entire world that Apple products can be remotely accessed.
This represents a serious security threat; while your agency may not have malicious intentions, there are plenty of other governments and organizations that now know that they can hack the devices of powerful world leaders and political figures. I insist that you cooperate with Apple and share your methods for breaching the phone so that the company can fix the security flaw.
