Target: Senator Ted Cruz and Governor John Kasich
Goal: Reverse pledge to support Donald Trump if he wins the Republican presidential nomination.
Presidential hopefuls Ted Cruz and John Kasich have signaled that they may not support Donald Trump even if he wins the Republican nomination for president. Both have previously pledged to get in step behind Trump should he get the nomination, but have wavered in light of the man’s increasingly violent rhetoric, personal attacks on family members, and encouragement of physical violence at his rallies.
Recently, Donald Trump launched a series of personal attacks against Ted Cruz’s wife, Heidi Cruz, over her appearance. Following this, after being asked whether he would still support Trump for President, Cruz replied, “I don’t make a habit out of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my family.” John Kasich, the third remaining candidate vying for the nomination, decried Trump’s behavior, saying that “if this becomes the order of the day, what kind of people are we going to have in the future that are going to run for public office?”
This kind of sentiment needs to be encouraged. Donald Trump’s racist, Islamophobic, misogynistic, and generally violent rhetoric is reminiscent of fascist dictators. Stopping such a person from becoming the President of the United States should be one goal that crosses party lines. Sign our petition to encourage Cruz and Kasich to renounce their pledges to support Trump if he wins the nomination.
Dear Senator Cruz and Governor Kasich,
You have both pledged to support Donald Trump for President of the United States if he wins the Republican nomination. However, both of you have also indicated at times that you are reluctant to do so, and both of you clearly know that Trump would be terrible for the country.
I understand that your party expects you to fall in line and support whoever the nominee is. However, the dangers of a Trump presidency go beyond party lines–or at least, they should. You’ve seen the racist, hateful violence that has been brought out into the open at Trump’s political rallies, gleefully encouraged by this man. People who have lived through fascist regimes have come forward to warn us that this is how fascist dictators operate and get elected. More violence is surely to come if Donald Trump becomes president.
No one is asking you to vote for a Democrat, but please do not support Donald Trump for president. Launch a write-in campaign for yourselves or any other more reasonable candidate. Run as independent candidates. There are many ways to support your political party without supporting Trump.
No matter what you may think of Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, nothing they could do would be as disastrous as the presidency of a man who attacks your families and encourages violent assaults at his rallies. Please pledge to refuse to support Donald Trump if he wins the Republican nomination for president.
