Target: Indiana Governor Mike Pence
Goal: Stop ban on abortions due to the fetus having a disability, and don’t force women to bury or cremate fetal remains.
Indiana Governor Mike Pence recently signed a bill that many people have described as a “kitchen sink” bill, a bunch of different abortion provisions and regulations that have failed to pass before, and are now being crammed into one new law. Among other things, this law will ban abortions for the reason of genetic anomaly. The new law will make it a requirement to bury or cremate all fetal remains, even from an early miscarriage. This law is one of the most extreme pieces of anti-abortion legislation we have ever seen. Demand that Governor Pence and the state of Indiana repeal this terrible new law.
The notion that you have to bury or cremate the fetus is unprecedented and ridiculous. On top of that, the law will also ban getting abortions for specific reasons. This means that women cannot choose to get an abortion based on the race, ethnicity, national origin or ancestry of the child, or if there is a diagnosis or potential diagnosis of the fetus having a disability.
There has been strong backlash against Governor Pence for signing this law into effect. To give you an indicator of just how strong this backlash is, Rep. Sean Eberhart, a Republican who has described himself as “as pro life as they come” said of the bill, “Today is a perfect example of a bunch of middle-aged guys sitting in this room making decisions about what we think is best for women.” This law will cause tremendous harm and stress for women in Indiana who contemplate abortion. Demand that it be repealed.
Dear Governor Pence,
The new anti-abortion law that you signed is a clear attack on women. This bill contains some things we have seen before, but it also contains some unprecedented anti-abortion laws that are incredibly dangerous.
While I understand that the issue of abortion is one of the most widely debated political topics in the United States, you have to realize that your bill is more than just a stance on pro life. The criticism your law is receiving from feminists, and both pro-choice and pro-life advocates should be enough to tell you how terrible it is. Sharon Negele, another representative who has a history of being pro-life has said of your new law, “The bill does nothing to save innocent lives. There’s no education, there’s no funding. It’s just penalties.”
Making women pay for the burial or cremation of their aborted fetus is not only an attack on women but it is a an abuse of power. We demand that you repeal this law that is very clearly attempting to weaken women’s rights.
