Target: Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor of California, President of the Senate
Goal: Support agreement to raise minimum wage to $15 per hour.
In a historic agreement, California labor unions and legislators have come to terms on a tentative arrangement that will make the state’s minimum wage the highest in the country. Senator Mark Leno announced that, should the measure be passed, all workers in California will be paid a minimum hourly rate of $15. If enacted, this victory would mark a huge step towards ensuring that America’s workforce is adequately compensated for their efforts.
Raising the minimum wage has become a pressing issue across the political landscape. Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has made the “Fight for 15” a central tenant of his campaign. Furthermore, strikes and demonstrations by fast-food workers have occurred in several major cities. As encouraging as the recent announcement in California is, Senator Leno noted that it was not yet a “done deal.” The measure must make it through the state’s Legislature. Sign the petition below to encourage California’s Lieutenant Governor to support this measure and provide a living wage for hardworking Americans.
Dear Mr. Newsom,
I am writing in reference to a progressive agreement concerning the minimum wage in your state. A preliminary measure has been approved that would raise the hourly rate to $15, but the measure is by no means a done deal. To become official, it must pass through California’s State Legislature, and I implore you to do everything in your power to ensure that this happens.
Wages have not risen in accordance with inflation, meaning that a worker making $7 or $8 per hour simply cannot provide for his or her family. By supporting this measure, you will be joining the fight to help provide a living wage for our country’s hardworking citizens.
