Target: Chairman of the Republican National Committee Reince Priebus
Goal: Cease sending people fake delinquency notices saying they’re “past due” on donating to the Republican Party.
The U.S. Republican Party is apparently trying to scam people into donations with letters made to look like overdue bill notices. The envelopes say “notice of delinquency” in big bold letters on the envelope and “past due” on the inside. The actual letter then asks for donations to the GOP.
This kind of tactic has been derided as sleazy and gross, using scare tactics to get people to open letters that they might otherwise toss out. Even worse, elderly individuals are susceptible to being scammed as their lack of familiarity with these tactic, poor eyesight, and other issues could lead them to give a donation they didn’t actually mean to give because they think it’s a real overdue bill notice.
Political parties will go to great lengths to get donations, but this is a new low. This somehow ended up with the Chairman of the Republican National Committee’s signature on it, indicating that he approved its use. Considering the fact that many elderly people vote Republican, it’s even more shameful that the party did something that could scam or at the very least scare them. Sign our petition to demand that the Republican Party immediately cease sending out these letters and apologize to everyone who received them.
Dear Chairman Priebus,
It’s recently come to light that the Republican Party is sending out letters asking for donations that look just like overdue bill notices, complete with “notice of delinquency” printed on the envelope in big red letters. The letter itself says that the recipient is “past due” on donations to your party. Many people have already expressed their outrage over this sleazy donation-seeking tactic.
Receiving something that looks just like a real notice of delinquency would be very frightening for a lot of people. Not only that, elderly people, many of whom vote for your party, could be fooled into think that it’s a real overdue bill and send you a donation they didn’t mean to give. Whether or not this was intentional, it’s a huge problem as many of the elderly of our nation are on fixed incomes.
Your signature is on this letter. This means that you are responsible for the stress, financial and emotional, that this letter has caused your constituents. We demand that you immediately cease sending these letters to people and issue an apology to everyone who has already received one.
