Praise Plan Granting Free College for All High School Graduates

Target: Mike Duggan, Mayor of Detroit

Goal: Applaud initiative to provide two years of free community college for students in Detroit.

All high school graduates in Detroit who are accepted into community colleges will receive two years’ free tuition under Mayor Mike Duggan’s “Detroit Promise” plan. All students, regardless of financial background, will be eligible as long as they have completed their junior and senior high school years in Detroit. The plan will help thousands of students each year access post-secondary education that might otherwise be unaffordable.

A similar, privately-funded plan has so far sent 2,000 students to college in only three years. This initiative, called the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation, relied on donations from companies and private citizens in the Detroit area. Now, the plan will be funded by property tax revenues, ensuring greater stability and wider coverage ability.

The plan will help attract families to the city, which is in desperate need of restoration after the loss of many industrial and auto production factories caused a massive population decline. It will also allow impoverished Detroit youth a better chance at post-secondary education. This will, in turn, improve their career prospects and further stimulate the city’s economy.

By making post-secondary education a viable option for all youth, the plan will help to break the cycles of poverty and violence rampant in Detroit. It will give not only students, but all citizens of Detroit, better prospects for the future. Sign the petition below to praise the mayor’s groundbreaking new plan.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mayor Mike Duggan,

A plan to provide two years of free community college education to all high school graduates in Detroit will come into effect this year. The plan uses property tax revenue to ensure that all students can attend college, thereby offering improved career prospects and a chance at a brighter future. The initiative will help thousands of impoverished youth access education that may have otherwise been unaffordable.

This initiative will enrich the lives of young people far into the future, and will help to break the vicious cycles of poverty and violence. The plan could serve as a successful model for other cities also considering free tuition programs. We, the undersigned, praise the creation of the Detroit Promise, an innovative new initiative that will benefit both students and the city as a whole.

Sincerely,
