Target: Alabama Governor Robert Bentley
Goal: Criticize gigantic pay raises given to personal advisers in spite of the region’s current financial crisis.
Alabama’s governor issued enormous pay raises to his closest advisers despite the state’s financial crisis, according to a recent report. Even as Governor Robert Bentley slashed funds for public services and Alabama’s financial situation worsened, Bentley’s advisers received raises as high as $73,000.
These increases came as workers across the state saw budgets and salaries dramatically reduced. Early in 2016, the city of Birmingham passed a measure to raise the minimum wage by $2.85, but Bentley quickly vetoed the move by signing a bill that banned any Alabama city from raising minimum wages.
Bentley’s cuts also had a devastating effect on the public school system, which has experience lowered salaries and cutbacks for several years. To ignore essential public services while lining the pockets of personal advisers is a shameful abuse of public trust.
Governor Bentley was elected to serve the state of Alabama, not his closest friends. Sign the petition below and urge the governor to stop issuing raises to his personal associates and re-distribute the money where it is truly needed–public school systems.
Dear Governor Bentley,
I am writing to denounce the recent revelations concerning the pay raises for your advisors. Though Alabama is in the midst of a financial crisis and the public school system is desperately underfunded, you decided that your own personal associates were more deserving of the money.
As governor, it is your duty to serve the people, not your friends. I urge you to end this pattern of cronyism and begin using funds to support the entire state, not just a select few.
