Target: Jeff Bezos, CEO Amazon, Inc.
Goal: Ensure gender equality by assessing gender pay gap and disclosing figures as requested by investment firm.
Through their activist division known as Arjuna Capital, Baldwin Brothers has requested that the top nine technology companies report on the gap in pay between males and females in their workforce. The report would also include a plan from each company as to how they will close that gap. Amazon has requested permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to leave this resolution until the next shareholder ballot vote, calling the request “vague and indefinite.”
Two of the other companies who received this request, Intel and Apple, have already started the process of gathering this information without waiting for shareholder votes. Amazon has been the subject of bad reports about their working environment and treatment of employees before. Rather than fear what such an analysis would show, Amazon should use this as an opportunity to become an equitable employer.
Demand that Amazon produce the gender pay gap figures and provide a plan for leveling the playing field.
Dear Mr. Bezos,
Amazon has a publicly documented history of providing a less than exemplary work environment. In the latest news-making incident, Amazon is refusing to provide gender pay gap data requested by Arjuna Capital. It’s time for Amazon to treat their employees with the respect they deserve.
We demand that Amazon provide the requested data and a plan to close the gender wage gap.
