Ban Alleged Puppy Mill Operators From Owning Pets for Life

dogs-by-josh-henderson

Target: Roscommon County Prosecuting Attorney, Mark D. Jernigan

Goal: Increase the far too lenient sentences faced by puppy mill operators charged with animal cruelty.

A family charged with animal cruelty after allegedly operating an inhumane puppy mill for over 15 years may only get a one year ban on pet ownership. Over 50 dogs were removed from the Quick’s property from what has been described as “heartbreaking conditions.” The dogs were reportedly found living in small wire cages stacked in a filthy and crowded basement. According to the ASPCA, most dogs had no access to food or water and many were distressed and fearful.

The Quick family has pleaded guilty to two counts of abandoning and cruelty to 10 or more animals, thus taking a plea deal allowing for all charges to be dismissed after one year. However, in light of the reportedly cruel conditions endured by the animals in their facility, a spokesperson for welfare group Puppy Mill Awareness of South East Michigan has stated that “one year with no animals is really not enough for this type of case.”

Sign this petition urging authorities to increase the sentence faced by the perpetrators to include a lifetime ban on owning animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Jernigan,

The Quick family has pleaded guilty to two counts of abandoning and cruelty to 10 or more animals after over 50 dogs were removed from reportedly terrible conditions at their facility. This plea deal may see their charges dismissed after a year. As Pam Fordyl of welfare group Puppy Mill Awareness of South East Michigan rightly states, “One year with no animals is really not enough for this type of case.”

Dogs were reportedly found cramped in a filthy basement in tiny wire cages stacked on top of each other. The ASPCA reports that many dogs were unsocialized and had no access to food or water.

Michigan needs strong regulations of puppy mills; it is one of the few states that has yet to enforce any. This particular cruelty case must stand as an example. Please ensure that these puppy mill operators are punished to the full extent of the law and are given a lifetime ban on owning animals, if they are found guilty for these horrendous crimes.

Sincerely,

They have no right to be anywhere near innocent sweet animals ever again.

  2. THE CRIME DESERVES A MORE SEVERE PUNISHMENT AND ONE THAT IS ENFORCED TO THE END OF THE SENTENCE. SEVERELY PUNISHING THESE MONSTERS IS THE ONLY WAY THAT WE ARE GOING TO STOP THE INSANITY. LOCK UM UP FOR LIFE!!!

  3. Puppy Mills add 500,000+ new puppies to our society yearly……meanwhile millions of dogs without homes die in shelters or on the streets as strays……

Puppy mills need to be BANNED.
