Target: President Joko Widodo, Indonesian President
Goal: Strictly enforce laws against the abuse of the mentally ill population in Indonesia.
In Indonesia, mentally ill patients are shackled and confined due to a mass ignorance about their diagnosis. Known as Pasung, this act of restraining relatives with mental illness has only grown in frequency since it was outlawed many years ago. Demand that justice is served for the mentally ill population.
A diagnosis of mental illness in Indonesia is akin to demonic possession. Patients are locked away in sheds, shackled in place and treated like animals. If a patient is lucky enough to receive hospital level care, they are then subjected to electroshock therapy and forced to listen to passages from the Koran. They sleep, urinate and defecate in the same place and receive little human interaction beyond the forced treatments.
Superstition and stigma have dictated healthcare for too long. Sign below and demand that the government put a stop to this abuse.
Dear President Widodo,
Superstition and stigma have put the mentally ill population in danger. Shackled and confined, they are treated like animals. We demand that you end this antiquated practice at once.
Mental illness infects the minds and bodies of its victims and makes it impossible for them to function in society. The practice of Pasung has done nothing to help those affected by mental illness. Shackling and confining the mentally ill only worsens their illness and supports the widespread belief that mental illness equals demonic possession.
The Mental Health Act of 2014 is a big step in protecting the mentally ill. However, nothing will change without its strict enforcement. We demand that you enforce these laws and pose serious consequences to those who defy them.
