Target: U.S. Presidential Candidate Ted Cruz
Goal: Reject the political endorsement of bigoted “ex-gay” activist Linda Harvey.
Prominent “ex-gay” activist and Mission America President Linda Harvey’s endorsement is proudly displayed on the website of presidential candidate Ted Cruz. Cruz says of his endorsers, they “are some of Ohio’s top conservative leaders and they add to our incredible list of courageous conservatives from all across the Buckeye State.” With respect to Linda Harvey, at least, Senator Cruz is mistaken. There is nothing courageous about her brand of bigotry.
The “ex-gay” movement rejects the experiences of LGBT people across the world and throughout history, preferring to operate under the delusion the human sexuality is wholly volitional. In its mildest form, the “ex-gay” movement advocates for the idea that LGBT people repress their sexualities. At its most twisted extreme, the movement foists damaging “conversion therapies” designed to suppress sexual desire in gay teens or, as in the case of Sam Brinton, reported in The Guardian, “attempts to beat the gay feelings” out of vulnerable children.
Harvey’s brand of “ex-gay” militancy takes an insidious turn; she pretends that LGBT people do not exist. As articulated in Mission America’s screed “Parents, Teacher & Administrators: What to do on the ‘Day of Silence,'” gender variance is “gender-confusion” and any suggestion that “homosexual students are silenced by … hatred, bigotry, and ignorance” is absurd.
Linda Harvey’s strident rejection of the reality faced by LGBT people extends to her personal statements as well. The Advocate reports in “Anti-Gay Activist: Buy My ‘No Such Thing as Gay’ Book” that Harvey claims “LGBT people ‘Hate Jesus'” and that transgender actress Laverne Cox is working with the devil.
Her most persistent and damaging claim, however, is the one that she makes on her own radio broadcast, The Word. She claims there that “there is no proof that there’s ever anything like a gay, lesbian or bisexual or transgendered [sic] child, or teen or human.” In Linda Harvey’s “ex-gay” world, LGBT people simply do not exist.
Like any American, Linda Harvey is entitled to her beliefs. The problem arises when a presidential candidate, Ted Cruz, celebrates the endorsement of a woman so profoundly out of touch with reality. Senator Cruz, if he becomes president, will have the solemn responsibility of representing and governing all Americans. That responsibility is incompatible with the belief that LGBT people and their experiences are imaginary. Sign on to urge Ted Cruz to repudiate the endorsement of “ex-gay” activist Linda Harvey.
Dear Ted Cruz,
You aspire to the highest office in America–the presidency. With that position comes sobering duty. As president, you would be responsible for representing and governing all Americans.
That obligation is incompatible with the beliefs of Linda Harvey, one of the Ohio endorsers noted and celebrated on your campaign website. As an “ex-gay” activist, her community rejects the experiences of LGBT people across the country. Harvey’s organization, Mission America, has written that suggesting “homosexual students are silenced by … hatred, bigotry, and ignorance” is absurd. Personally, Harvey has called transgender actress and activist Lavern Cox an agent of the devil and said that LGBT people hate Jesus.
More importantly, Harvey denies the existence of LGBT people. She stridently declared on her radio program “The Word,” that “there is no proof that there’s ever anything like a gay, lesbian or bisexual or transgendered [sic] child, or teen or human.” Should you become president, you would have to represent and govern the same LGBT Americans whose existence Linda Harvey denies.
We urge you to recognize the seriousness of the office to which you aspire. We urge you to search your conscience. Acknowledge the existence of LGBT people and repudiate Linda Harvey.
