Demand Better Lab Animal Welfare Regulations

Target: Qin Chuan, President of the Chinese Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences

Goal: Carry out the newly drafted national standard on laboratory animal welfare in China.

A new national standard for laboratory animal welfare and ethics has recently been drafted in China, and will make a huge difference in protecting laboratory animals if it is carried out. The new standard would minimize the use of animals for research and testing purposes while also reducing their pain.

It is vitally important that research facilities make use of the latest requirements for the ethical treatment of lab animals, as these animals are often horribly mistreated during the testing process. This new standard would hold the pharmaceutical and other industries that test their products on animals to a stricter ethical standard.

According to Sun Deming, chairman of the Welfare and Ethics Committee of the Chinese Association for Laboratory Animal Sciences, the welfare and ethics reviews currently conducted by users of laboratory animals are often too lax. While these reviews are required of all companies that use research animals, the results are variable and inconsistent as they all adopt different standards. The new draft outlines regulations that would hold all of these companies to a common standard, ensuring that laboratory animals receive the same degree of ethical treatment from each industry.

The draft draws on laboratory animal welfare legislation from other countries, such as the U.K., and has been recognized by leading experts both in China and abroad. It puts forward requirements for the production and transportation of laboratory animals as well as their use for testing purposes. This means that the employees who handle the animals would be held to certain qualifications, and animal-raising facilities would be monitored and held to ethical standards.

These new standards would mark a legislative breakthrough for laboratory animal welfare in China, and the draft needs to be carried out to ensure that these animals receive ethical treatment. Sign the petition below to urge China to adopt its first national standard on laboratory animal welfare and ethics by the end of the year and take a step toward the humane treatment of research animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Chuan,

It is vitally important that the new national standard for laboratory animal welfare and ethics in China is carried out. This standard would minimize the use of animals for research and testing purposes and would reduce the amount of pain they experience. Laboratory animals are often treated unethically, and this new standard would hold the pharmaceutical and other industries to an ethical standard that would make a huge difference in protecting research animals.

The draft has been recognized by leading experts both in China and abroad, and would enforce stricter regulations for the production, transportation, and use of laboratory animals. While all laboratory users are currently required to conduct welfare and ethics reviews, these reviews are often too lax as there is no common standard that all companies must meet. The new standard would change that, and would mark a legislative breakthrough for laboratory animal welfare in China.

I am urging you to take a stand for animal welfare and support the draft. Please take every possible action to ensure that the new standard is carried out by the end of the year, and ensure that laboratory animals receive the protection they deserve.

Sincerely,

  3. Cecily Colloby says:

..and while you are about it, China, stop all the other attrocities that you routinely subject animals to. There are dozens ….

  4. Why use innocent animals when there are plenty of pedophiles to test on!

  5. I wish people would stop with half baked ideas for petitions. Seriously, treat animals in labs better? How about close all labs that use animals for testing chemical & cosmetics. China has a new national standard for the treatment of animals in labs???? Was there ever a old national standard??? The new standard would reduce the “amount of Pain” the animals experience. How about stopping all the pain, terror, isolation, cruelty & abuse of animals by using alternate sources to test chemicals & cosmetics. I say STOP TESTING ON ALL ANIMALS.

  6. No more testing on any animals!

  7. end all cruel animal testing and save lives.

  8. Natasha Glinsky says:

I don’t trust china, especially when it comes to morals. china is notorious for animal abuse and should have nothing to do with animals. It’s all about $ over there. Please prove me wrong.

  9. No need to animal test, they are not nor do they process the same way as humans. You got plenty of specimens on death row now, why use a defenseless animal that can’t give you accurate information. Use a human.
